A NEW DK SERIES! Creative Schooling: Designed and Driven by Families

DK is pleased to host a Hot Lunch series exploring the idea of students and families driving their learning. Rather than relinquishing the power of learning and education to schools and districts, many families are active in the creation and implementation of their student’s learning and playlist of educational opportunities. We are excited to explore the rich landscape of learning that happens when students own and drive their learning paths – and excited to explore all that entails – from financing, to decision making, to state and local policies.

SESSION ONE: Pushing the Envelope: Families Driving Education

Florida has taken the lead in creating programs and opportunities for families to take control of their child’s education and to drive their student’s learning through several impactful programs. The Gardiner Scholarship allows parents to personalize the education of their children by directing money toward a combination of programs and approved providers and the Reading Scholarship offers parents access to an educational savings account, worth $500, to pay for tuition and fees related to part-time tutoring, summer and after-school literacy programs, instructional materials and more. Engage with Doug Tuthill, President of Step Up for Students as he describes his personal journey from being the teacher’s union President to his current work serving families.

About the speaker:

Doug Tuthill has been president of Step Up For Students since August 2008. He is a former high school teacher, college professor, and teacher union president. Doug graduated from the University of Florida. He is married with two adult children.
