The Achievement Formula: Avoiding the False Choices of the School Reform Wars

It is unknown whether either side of the school reform wars would be happier if they understood the whole story but what’s clear is those interested in producing transformational outcomes must not only understand the whole, complex story but engage in the work of making it real on the ground. Anyone who has ever worked with children, especially children living in poverty or significant adversity, knows that helping each of them realize and achieve their full potential is one of the most challenging and complex endeavors. Yet, it can be and has been done when people have overcome their biases about what’s possible; stop looking for silver bullets and quick fixes; and bring together the full range of strategies, people, systems and processes required to address the range of needs and opportunities their children face.
