Hybrid Solutions

Camden City School District (18,000 children) is one of the lowest-performing school districts, located in one of the poorest and most violent cities in the country. For decades, the public school system has done little with these children’s extraordinary potential, and in 2013 New Jersey finally took over the Camden City School District. Gov. Chris Christie appointed Superintendent Paymon Rouhanifard, who has found early success with hybrid solutions, including a district-charter mix known as Renaissance Schools that have the promise to rewrite the future of the city labeled by Rolling Stone as “Apocalypse, New Jersey.”
